'Tis the Season to Give Back

Volunteer with the HLSA-DC team at DC Central Kitchen!

Join us for an evening volunteering at DC Central Kitchen!  Every day, volunteers like you help DCCK transform 3,000 pounds of donated food into 5,000 balanced meals that are distributed at little or no cost to 80 nearby homeless shelters, transitional homes, and nonprofit organizations throughout the region.

How to get there?

DCKK is located on the ground floor of the Federal City Shelter, a three-story gray building on the southeast corner of 2nd and E Streets NW. There is no on-site parking at the Kitchen, so please use public transportation if possible.

Metro: The closest metro stop is Judiciary Square on the Red Line. From the Judiciary Square 4th and D Street exit, head south on 4th Street NW, left on D Street NW, left on 1st Street NW, and then left into the service alley just south of Sandwiches by Phillip. The entrance to the Kitchen looks like a service/delivery entrance and is marked by a large sign.

Parking: There is no on-site parking at the Main Kitchen. Limited parking is available in lots at Union Station, on E Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets NW, and on the street.  There is metered parking along E Street NW, 1st Street NW and New Jersey Avenue NW, all within a block of the Kitchen.

What Else?

The Rules, of Course!

  • We will send you an email to confirm your attendance the week before our date of service - please try to make your shift or let us know as early as you can if you can't make it.  DCCK is counting on our volunteers in order to effectively serve the community.  If you schedule a volunteer shift and do not show up, DC Central Kitchen won't be able to meet its commitments.
  • Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your shift time to allow ample time for orientationDCKK does not allow late arrivals!
  • All volunteers must be 12 years or older.
  • Storage space for volunteer personal belongings is limited, so please plan to travel light.
  • DRESS CODE:  Safety is our number one concern. All volunteers must wear appropriate and professional attire suitable for an industrial production kitchen. Please wear closed toed shoes, sleeves and long pants. Shoes with high-grip soles are strongly recommended.  Due to health regulations, volunteers who do not follow this dress code will not be allowed to work in the Kitchen. Please remember:
    • No shorts or short skirts/dresses
    • No tights, spandex, leggings, or pajama pants
    • No tank tops or sleeveless shirts/dresses
    • No shirts with exposed midriff (front or back)
    • No open toed sandals or shoes
